Cyclone Evan expected to worsen as it approaches Fiji

Fiji will now be bracing for the tempest that has lashed Samoa for the past two days, leaving its capital city of Apia in ruins and killing at least three people, two of them reportedly children.

After passing over Samoa last night, Cyclone Evan backtracked, sparing the main settlements a second dose of destruction, but provoking hurricane warnings for Savai’i, the largest and highest island in Samoa and the Samoa Islands chain.

Fiji Meteorological Service director Alipate Waqaicelua said the cyclone was still hovering over Samoa, with sustained winds of up to 170km/h and momentary gusts of almost double that and that it was currently a category three cyclone with “a high probability of developing into a category four [cyclone] overnight.”

"At this stage there is nothing in its way to destroy its structure so it’s got everything favourable for it to develop further," Waqaicelua added.

In a media briefing this afternoon, permanent secretary for information Sharon Smith-Johns said Evan’s affects would begin to be felt in Fiji from as early as Sunday, but urged people “not to wait to prepare until it was too late.”

She said Evan would most likely be more devastating than Cyclone Kina in 1993, which killed at least 18 people and left up to 10,000 homeless with damage estimates topping $135 million.
